This Paleo Whole30 Sweet and Sour Sauce is so delicious, easy, and the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Sweetened only with fruit and made in less than 30 minutes- you will love it!
This sauce is so good! I recently made it specially for Paleo Egg Roll in a Bowl, but I've also used it for Sweet and Sour Chicken and it's amazing like that too. It's completely sweetened with fruit and is the perfect balance of sweet and savory.
You will love how easy it is- all the ingredients are added to one pan, cooked then blended.
This isn't quite as smooth as the store bought version, but that can easily be changed by adding more water when blending it. We kind of like a little thick with texture- it's personal preference though!
It's delicious, it's easy, and it's a sauce I know I'll be making over and over! I think you'll love it, too!
Here are a few other Whole30 sauces that are popular- Paleo Ketchup, Paleo Mayo, and Paleo Ranch.

Paleo Whole30 Sweet and Sour Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 large onion, diced
- coconut oil for cooking- about 1 tablespoon
- 3 cloves garlic diced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ½-3/4 cup water or bone broth
- 1 8oz can crushed pineapple in juice, not syrup
- ¼ cup tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons coconut aminos
- 2 dates
Instructions
- In a medium sauce pan, cook onion in coconut oil until tender- about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic, salt, pepper, water, pineapple, tomato paste, coconut aminos, and dates.
- Cook for 10 minutes, then take it off the heat and blend using an immersion blender. Alternatively, you can blend it in a blender or food processor. A hand immersion blender is the easiest though. Add more water if needed until desired consistency is reached.
- Cook for another 5 minutes.
- Store in the fridge for up to a week.

Dude! I just made this, but used fresh plums instead of pineapple. Diced them up, cooked them down (left the skins on) and now I have the most epic RED sauce. Added some chili flakes in while it simmered for funsies too. 3-5 normal sized plums should do the trick for the full recipe (I did giant Costco plums, so only used 2)

Thanks for trying my recipe, Terri! Although you kind of made it your own and it sounds delicious! Yum!

Great recipe! Very simple, and not many ingredients! Do you know approximately how long this will keep in the fridge?
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Emily! It should keep for about 1 week in the fridge. Enjoy!

Oh my lord!!! I stumbled across your site yesterday looking for a sauce to dip some chicken nuggets in and I think I'm in love. This sauce is everything! I thought it was good last night, but I tried it this morning in a noodle bowl and it was crazy, crazy good. I'm pretty sure you could put this on cardboard and it would taste delicious. Thank you so much! Now I need to go stalk all your other recipes. 😀
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Jeanie! Thanks for trying my recipe and for the great feedback! I'm so glad you like the sauce and hope you find other recipes you love! 🙂
Adrienne says
This looks delicious but I'd probably never use the whole amount in one week. Does it freeze? How do you use it all up before it expires? Thanks!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Adrienne- I have only made this when making my egg roll in a bowl as a topping so it always gets used up. I have not tried freezing it. I think it would be great on some chicken or pork. Here is the link to the egg roll in a bowl:http://www.jaysbakingmecrazy.com/2016/06/05/paleo-egg-roll-in-a-bowl/

I have a nightshade allergy, do you have any suggestions on a tomato paste replacement?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Jessica- I don't know what would be a good replacement so my advice would be to just leave it out. I think it would still be good without it.
Dawn says
This is great. We like things spicy so I added a little chopped jalapeño to the mix. Thanks for the great recipe.
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Dawn! Thanks for trying it and I love the addition of jalapeño- that sounds delicious!
Amy says
Hey! I want to make this but I don't have any dates. What happens if I leave them out?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Amy- you can simply leave them out. It may be a tad less sweet, but there will still be that sweetness from the pineapple so it should be ok. Hope you enjoy it!
Adria says
I tried the applesauce but ended up having to add some apple cider vinegar as it lacked the tang of typicL sweet & sour sauce. I'll keep working on it.
Adria says
Just came across this recipe, and while it sounds delightful, I am allergic to pineapple. Would an unsweetened applesauce work in this, do you think?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Adria- I think applesauce would work great! Let me know if you it and how it comes out.
Melissa A Rios says
Use mango juice instead
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks for the great tip, Melissa!
