These Sloppy Joes are Paleo & Whole30 approved, with so much more flavor than you'll get from the can and can be made in just 30 minutes.
Pictures updated August 2018, recipe is the same!
These Sloppy Joe's are a family favorite. I just made them on a whim last week when I was trying to come up with a quick meal that fit in the Whole30 guidelines. They came out amazing! Better than I expected. I didn't measure anything, as usual, so I remade them this week to get the measurements right.
Here's the ingredients you'll need. Pretty simple - the only thing that you may not have is the coconut aminos. You can find it at any health food store or online and I highly recommend it. It was such a huge part of our Whole30.
And that tomato paste? Love love love!! You can use just a little bit and throw it in the fridge until you need it again. No more wasting half a can!
Sauté the onion and pepper in a pan until they start to soften and the onions start to become translucent. It takes about 5 minutes. Note that I'm making a double batch, so the pan won't be this full when you make it. Unless you also have a husband that eats 8 times a day - then I recommend making a double batch so it last longer than a day.
Add the beef, break it up with a spatula, and cook until browned.
Add the ketchup, tomato paste, and coconut aminos. Turn on low and cook for at least 10 minutes. I like to simmer it for 30-40 to develop the flavors, but that's not necessary if you don't have the time. Serve it over zucchini noodles, a baked sweet potato, straight out of a bowl, or my husbands favorite- on oven fries. Serving it on a paleo bun would also be delicious.
I know- that looks like spaghetti sauce, but it's not. It's so much better. The (naturally) sweet ketchup combines with the savory onion, pepper, and coconut aminos for the best combination.
YUM!!
These Sloppy Joes are so good! I know you'll love them because they are so quick and easy and they taste amazing! It's a meal the whole family will love.
Here's a link to the ketchup I used. It's pretty awesome 🙂 Paleo Whole30 Ketchup

Sloppy Joes- Paleo & Whole30
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil, or oil of choice
- 1 red pepper, or yellow/orange
- 1 large onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 pound ground beef
- ¾ cup paleo ketchup
- ¼ cup coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
Instructions
- Place the coconut oil in a large skillet.
- Dice up the red pepper and onion and sauté in the coconut oil over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes, until they start to soften and onions start to become translucent. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder and stir in.
- Add the beef and break it up with a spatula. Cook until browned. Add ketchup, coconut aminos, and tomato paste and stir to combine.
- Let cook on low for at least 10 minutes. The longer it cooks the more the flavors will develop. I like to simmer it for 30-40 minutes.
- Serve over zucchini noodles, a sweet potato, or just eat it out of a bowl!

These are an absolute staple in our home. I made them for the first time during Whole30 and now I just make them all the time because we're obsessed. I even recommend them to friends and family when they do Whole30 (or just in general because I love it).
It's great over mashed sweet potatoes OR in a salad with Tessemae's Habanero Ranch-- sooooo good (and that's coming from someone who doesn't like salads).
Definitely always need to make a double batch though 🙂

Thank you so much, Dannelly! Yes, we always make a double batch! So glad you like them 🙂

Hi- do you happen to know how long to make in an instant pot? I’d love to make tonight and was hoping to do that way, if possible!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Tara- sorry for the delayed response. I'd say brown it then cook it for 8 minutes. Hope that helps!
Julie says
These are fantastic! My husband and I make them several times a month! The leftovers are great to pair with eggs in the morning and I even used them as a base for shakshuka! I simply can’t get enough of these sloppy joes! Yum!
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Julie! So glad you love them!
Andrea says
I have made this multiple times, I am in love and I hate sloppy Joe’s. So delicious and so much flavor.
Side note:How many servings does this make?
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Andrea! So glad you like it! I'd say it's about 3 servings. I usually double it so there's leftovers.
Pam says
Just made the sloppy joes... Delicious!!! Can not wait to eat it/them. Meal prepping for the week and it is so hard not to eat this now!!!
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks for trying them, Pam! I'm so glad you like them 🙂

I don't think I've commented on this but I've made it about 6 times so I probably should. This is one of my all-time favorite recipes. I eat it over cauliflower rice, with steamed broccoli or over a baked potato - depending on how I'm feeling and whether I'm watching my carbs. I often just eat it alone out of the bowl with a spoon...it's so good!
I dice up 2 carrots and put in there as well and whatever leftover veggie I have in the refrigerator. It freezes well so I can make a big batch and have several meals at the ready.
THANK YOU! This simple recipe is sooo good!!! 🙂
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Cara! Thanks for trying it and I'm so glad you like it!

I substituted the paleo ketchup (couldn't find in the store) for a paleo BBQ sauce. I'm sure it changes the flavor a bit but it was DELISH!! Just a tip for people who can't find paleo ketchup and don't want to make their own 🙂
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks for trying my recipe and for that great tip, Jen! I'm so glad you liked it and found a way to make it work for you.

Omigosh, this really is Sloppy Joes! I found your ketchup and made it and it is dee-lish. I've really enjoyed it to make wonderful cocktail sauce for shrimp. I decided I'd try the Sloppy Joe recipe thinking it might be OK. It's GREAT! I get tired of ground beef but I'll be making this again. And again! Thank you!
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Beverly! Thanks for trying my recipe and for the great feedback! I'm so glad you like both my ketchup and sloppy joes! 🙂
Karin says
This is phenomenal!!!!! I added slices of pickles to it and the tang was next level.
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Karin! So glad you like them. Adding pickles sounds delicious!

Hi again, my other question is that I can only get 80/20 grass fed ground beef that is affordable but I find it to be too much fat. Would it work if I cooked the ground beef separately so that i can drain the fat before I add it to the veggies?
Thanks again!!
Jessica DeMay says
Yes, that will work. You're welcome- enjoy! 🙂
