This Paleo Whole30 Ranch Dressing is thick, creamy, fresh, and so delicious! Easy, comes together quick, and made with all real ingredients. Dairy free and loaded with flavor.
This Ranch Dressing is so good and you will not miss the store bought stuff at all! It is surprisingly easy and takes only a couple minutes to make. I use my homemade mayo in it, but you can also use a paleo store bought version, just check for added sugar. I know there is a clean version made by Primal Kitchen with no added sugar or any other unwanted ingredients. Homemade is easy and cheaper, but they both will work.
I love using this for my Paleo Chicken Bacon Ranch Casserole, Buffalo Chicken Casserole (paleo), and Paleo Chicken Bacon Ranch Potato Skins.
The rest is just some seasonings that you probably already have on hand. A little garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and parsley. So simple. When you first mix it, the best thing to use is a whisk because you will want to get all the little lumps out of the coconut cream. It will only take a minute, but is important to make smooth. It will set up in the fridge and turn thick. Not too thick where you can't dip veggies, but not watery at all.
This is the perfect dressing to use for veggies, salads, meat, basically anything. It's delicious, easy, and healthy! I know you'll love it! Of course, this is gluten free and dairy free as well. Try it and see for yourself how simple homemade is- you'll be hooked!

I just made this by skimming the cream off the top of the coconut milk in the can. It was delicious. My girlfriend and I were amaized how You can't taste the coconut. Thank you for the recipe
Dana says
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I recently found out my tummy and skin issues were from a dairy and egg allergy and have been feeling stuck with hummus and oil dressings. I just whipped up a batch of this and did my happy dance in the kitchen. It tastes great and I can't wait to go to the store and get carrots to dip. I didn't have coconut cream but used the top solid part of a coconut milk can and I used a little dill because I love it. So good.
Jessica DeMay says
You are so welcome, Dana!! 🙂 I'm so glad you found this recipe that works with your allergies. That top solid part on top is the cream, so you did it right. Thanks for trying my recipe and for the great feedback!
Jane says
I have a question about coconut cream, are you talking about what goes in a pina colada? Like the Coco Lopez brand? I believe that is called coconut cream.
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Jane- good question. I use unsweetened coconut cream. Trader Joe's sells it and I've seen it in the Asian sections at bigger stores. Alternatively, you can take 2 cans of full fat coconut milk, place them in the fridge overnight, open and use the thick part. That is the cream. You don't want the kind used for pina coladas because that is sweetened. I hope that helps!
Jane says
Thanks, we got a Trader Joe's here a few months ago, this gives me a reason to go there now!
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Jane!

I made this recipe, but only half to try it out on the half a family that needs it. The daddy poured it all over his salad and thought it was great. Since I halved the recipe I had half a can of coconut cream left and used it for a recipe for paleo caramel sauce for them to put on their non-dairy ice cream. It was a hit too. I felt like a real winner that night! I will say that trip to Trader Joes cost me eighty bucks!
Jessica DeMay says
Ha!! Trader Joes always gets me! I'm glad the ranch was enjoyed and that caramel sounds delicious! Thanks for the great feedback, Jane!

Just wondering about the raw eggs in your mayo recipes. We gave always been told not to eat raw eggs. Don't you have concerns on that?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Cheryl- I'm not concerned about the raw eggs. I buy pasteurized eggs and there is only a small chance of getting sick. If you want to be totally safe, Davisdon's makes a variety of eggs called Safe Eggs, and they are made to be totally save eaten raw or undercooked. I've seen them at Kroger and I'm sure they are at other large stores. I hope that helps!
Nina Rennie says
Hi there
This recipe looks delicious, I was just wondering, could I maybe substitute the coconut cream for sour cream? I am not a huge fan of coconut cream. Thanks so much
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Nina- that should work, but then of course it won't be paleo.
Tiffany says
Looking forward to trying this recipe, but I have to ask - where did you get the mason jar?! It's so cute!
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Tiffany! I usually find that at thrift stores for around 50 cents. I also found them on Amazon though- here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Jar-Crystal-8-Ounce-Quilted/dp/B00B80TJUI/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1470754892&sr=1-7&keywords=mason+jar
Ashley says
I'm sorry, but we did not like this at all. The coconut cream was very overpowering... it tasted like garlic flavored coconut. We did use a different paleo/whole 30 mayo though, which I didn't think should matter. Happy other people have found success with this recipe but it's not for us.
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Ashley- I'm sorry you didn't like it. I've only used my mayo so that maybe was it? Good luck finding one that you enjoy- I know there are others out there.
Alex says
I do agree that i can still taste the coconut. I don't mind it at all, but my husband is not a coconut fan. So I'm not sure how to adjust the flavor to hide it better. I could eat it with everything though ?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Alex- I'm so glad you like it! You can always try adding more seasonings- onion powder, garlic powder, parsley. I've even had people add dill and love it. Maybe that would help your husband like it. Thanks for trying my recipe!
Lynn says
So glad I found this post! Have been off dairy just over a month now, very hard for this Wisconsin girl, smack dab in the middle of dairy country. Love dairy, all of it, but pretty sure it does not love me.
Anyway, trying to find salad dressing w/o dairyvis not real easy for, this picky eater, have one I like, but have been longing for ranch dressing. Nearest Trader Joes is a 2 hr+ drive,so will experiment with canned coconut milk. Got an ice cream machine to try coconut milk ice cream, and now a ranch dressing, just need a good gluten-free, dairy-free grilled cheese,!Thank you!!!
Jessica DeMay says
Thank you, Lynn! I understand- dairy is what kept us from being totally paleo for so long. No cheese? Is that possible? 😉 But my husband feels a million times better not having it- so there's no choice.
If you use canned coconut milk, make sure to get full fat and refrigerate it overnight then use the hardened part at the top. Also, Thrive Market seems it in small cans (use this link for 15% off your first order: http://thrv.me/H1oxqu)
I just, this week, found a dairy free cheese that isn't made with soy that actually tastes pretty good! I haven't tried making a grilled cheese, but it may work. The brand is Follow Your Heart and I found it at a health food store by the vegan food and at Meijer by the cheese. I hope that helps and I hope you enjoy this ranch! 🙂
Lynn says
Hey Jessica,
Was looking army some of the pretend cheeses at Woodmans market, the ingredient lists were scary! Will keep an eye out for that brand. Bought dill yesterday thinking I would need that for the ranch dressing, An online Now missing the onion powder, do have the dried onion flakes??
Jessica DeMay says
Hey Lynn- yes, some of those ingredient lists are not good!! You could totally add the dill- that would be a delicious addition. Onion flakes will work fine. I hope you enjoy it!
Lynn says
I went to Woodmans Market today and found the coconut cream and got my onion powder. I also went by the organic/vegan cheeses, could not remember the name but grabbed one that'S thought might be it, lo and behold it was the follow my heart American slices!!
I am not a Paleolithic person, tried for a bit, but am trying to follow a more plant based diet, and went off gluten and dairy as I am hypothyroidism and have multiple health and auto-immune. I am so missing ice cream and Mexican slathered in cheese and sour cream. I bought an ice cream machine at auction and am going to try some of the coconut ice cream recipes.Plan to make the ranch dressing tomorrow, may even see if a grilled cheese works with the follow my heart Cheese. I want to thank you for doing the work you do here to make life a bit easier for some of us.I am an user picky eater so every new thing I can try and like is a huge win for me. Happy cooking to you!!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Lynn- I'm glad you found that cheese. Maybe it will melt for you 🙂 I just bought an ice cream maker, too. I've made one batch of vanilla ice cream, but wasn't totally happy with the results so I'm going to keep experimenting. As soon as I nail a good recipe, I'll be posting it. I also want to make a chocolate version as well. You are welcome! Thank you for your support and I'm happy to make life a little easier. Eating dairy/gluten free shouldn't mean giving up delicious food!! 🙂 I hope the ranch turned out for you. Oh, I have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to Paleo Ice Cream- not my recipes but you may find some inspiration there.
Lisa says
Where can I buy coconut cream? Sprouts? Love this idea for ranch!!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Lisa- you can find it at Trader Joe's, I'm not sure about Sprouts because we don't have those here. Alternatively, you take take full fat coconut milk (unsweetened, in a can) and place it in the fridge overnight then use the top part that is hard and thick. You'll need two cans if done that way. I hope that helps and I hope you try it! 🙂
Lisa says
Oh right trader joes! Forgot they had everything. Thanks!
Sarah says
This is the best homemade dairy free ranch recipe I've tried! I'm thinking that it could stand to have a little bit stronger flavor though... I may experiment with the seasonings next time
Jessica DeMay says
Thank you so much, Sarah! I am so glad you like it. Yes! Play around with more garlic, onion, etc. until you get it to your desired strength. 🙂
