This Easy Homemade Paleo Chocolate is so delicious and so simple to make. Four ingredients and a few minutes is all it takes.
This chocolate was made specifically for my sister. She loves chocolate, like love loves it, but she wasn't loving all the weird ingredients in the store bought ones or the price of the "healthier" ones. I knew it had to be simple to make, so I tried and it has become her favorite! The first batch was a test for sweetness, then I did some adjusting and now it's perfect. These are sweetened just the right amount if you like dark chocolate. If you like your chocolate a little sweeter then use a little more honey.
I just love the size of the hearts. A few are perfect for a craving. These are dairy free, soy free, naturally sweetened and everything in them is good for you. You can feel good eating these delicious treats. The hearts in the above picture are coconut which is why you can see the little specs. The other flavors are smoother.
Simple and Healthy Chocolate
I'm not claiming to be a health expert, but here are some health benefits of the ingredients.
- Cacao powder: this is not the same as cocoa powder. Cacao is full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
- Coconut oil- strengthens immune system, helps prevent wrinkles, improves bone health, rich in lauric acid that helps maintain blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and helps heal infections. (Many other benefits not listed)
- Honey- alleviates allergies, cough suppressant, and is a sleep aid.
Make them once and you'll be hooked. You can play around with flavors, adjust the sweetness, and make fun shapes.
They do need to be stored in the fridge or freezer because they melt at room temperature. Once they're hard, I just pop them into a container and keep them in the freezer. It works perfect.
Here are the molds I used for the hearts. They're my favorite and one batch fills both molds perfectly.
I also got a letter mold and I had a little fun playing with them. 🙂
I am so glad I'm able to make my sister a healthy treat that she loves. And I love how quick and easy they are! Here are some more chocolate treats to try:

Hi. I know that a lot of chocolate recipes that use coconut oil end up having a slight coconut taste - is that true of this one? I don't mind, but I know some people who don't like it.
Also, since my cousin's vegan I'd be making them with agave syrup instead of honey. Normally I substitute it one-for-one, but as I'm asking a question anyway I hoped you'd let me know your opinion on this.
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Aisling- it does have a slight coconut taste, but you can use refined coconut oil to avoid that. I'm not familiar with agave at all so I can't answer that question. I do know that maple syrup will also work in the same amount. I hope everyone likes it 🙂

hi friends. excited to try this out. just a note - you should never actively heat honey. i am going to make it and add the honey after and let you know how it goes.

I've made these a few times now, the first time was perfect but ever since then I have not had success! The second time I burnt the mix but every time after I've been so careful with heat, quantities of ingredients and tried different amounts of honey... nothing seems to work it's like the honey is in the centre of the chocolate and the outside layer is bitter. I'm gonna try them in the fridge next time 🙁
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Samantha- thanks for trying my recipe and I'm sorry you're having issues. My sister mentioned this happened to her before- like it was a liquid center and she didn't care for it. I think if you used maple syrup that would help because it will mix more evenly. Honey can be heavy and grainy sometimes. I hope you try that!

I just made these and wow! The only criticism I have is that they are sooo addictive. I'm having trouble stopping myself from eating them all! I added a 1/2 tap of vanilla extract and it worked out nicely. 🙂
Jessica DeMay says
Haha! Thanks for trying my recipe, Steph! I'm so glad you like them! 🙂

Any good substitutes for people avoiding all sugars? (This includes lactose, fruit etc)??
Thanks
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Chris- you could try Swerve.
Chris says
Thanks Jess
I've never heard of Swerve before.
Is it a natural product?
Is it available worldwide (Australia)?
Thanks
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Chris, Swerve is a zero calorie sweetener that has no aftertaste. Here is the amazon link so you can check it out-https://www.amazon.com/Swerve-Sweetener-16-oz-Granular/dp/B004X71550/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1475361866&sr=1-2&keywords=swerve%2Bsweetener&th=1
I'm not sure if it's available in Australia- sorry! I hope that helps, let me know if you have more questions.

Looks amazing! Can't wait to try this. Just wondering, if the honey can be substituted with coconut nectar?
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Courtney! I haven't tried it with coconut nectar, but that should work fine. Hope you enjoy 🙂

Looks amazing! Could I swap cacao powder to cocoa powder?
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Mallory! Yes, that will work. I hope you enjoy them!

I just made these an hour ago - because my chocolate molds arrived from Amazon! I am trying to cut back on sugars and additives and these totally satisfy my sweet tooth without the guilt (or stomach issues). I crushed up almonds as my addition, and I can't stop eating them. Thank you for this amazing recipe!
Jessica DeMay says
You're welcome, Erin!! Thank you for trying it 🙂 I love the idea of crushed up almonds- almost like a crunch bar! Thanks for the great feedback!
Kate says
Hi! I'm looking forward to making these. Do they have a coconut flavor due to the coconut oil? Thanks!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Kate. I don't think the coconut flavor is that strong, especially with the add-ins. If you really hate the flavor you can always use a refined version which is milder. I hope you try them!
Susan Parrish says
What do you use to put the chocolate in those tiny hearts without making a mess?
Jessica DeMay says
Good question!! I use a small spoon- like one you eat with. I place the mold on a large dinner plate to keep it steady, then fill carefully. I scrape any drippings into a heart with the spoon as well. I hope that makes sense and helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you enjoy them!!
